Stop

I'm afraid you are making far too many mistakes. The most obvious case I think of recently is on User talk:Monelisa, where you edit-warred with another user who was removing copyright violations and puffery from a BLP, repeatedly putting them back in and accusing the other party of disruptive editing. It was certainly no less disruptive than you, and be advised that had I caught the pair of you mid-revert, I would have blocked you for a combination of edit-warring and copyright violations.

Today, I find a similar case on Sarah Marshall (French model) with Vision 2 (talk · contribs), where you have edit-warred with this user over content cited to www.purepeople.com. I don't know what makes that a reliable source for a BLP, but I do know that our policy clearly states, "Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.". Again, edit-warring and reporting a user who is following policy correctly to AIV is disruptive.

Looking at your talk page, I see a conversation above about Urfi Javed, where you tagged the article for CSD A7 (it was later declined) and told a user who complained "The question is her notability". To cut a long story short, CSD A7 is not and never has been about "notability" (by which I assume you mean WP:GNG) and if you think it is, you need to read the speedy deletion criteria again carefully. You may also be interested in reading a historical project Newbie treatment at speedy deletion, where a number of experienced administrators conducted a field trial to see how the speedy deletion criteria were being applied at NPP.

In summary, you need to stop. Please stay away from the administrative side of Wikipedia otherwise I may be forced to take this discussion to ANI. Thanks for listening.

@Ymblanter: In the light of what I have just written, I am disappointed this user has just received the New page reviewer flag and would urge you to reconsider. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:24, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: you can take it if you want, after a proper discussion with the user, no problem from my side.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:30, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: I must say I don't appreciate your lack of WP:AGF and your immediate threats to take me to WP:ANI. My understanding has always been that WP:ANI was a last resort, not a second step... There is plenty of room for discussion LONG before an ANI is required. I will be the first to admit that I have loads to learn and am always, ALWAYS to take any and all advice from other editors, particularly those editors like yourself who have been around for quite sometime. Allow me to take your notes point by point.
  1. First lets look at Peter Rice (executive) & Monelisa. This was a brand new editor with a clear and obvious WP:COI as indicated by this comment they posted where they stated that The owner of the page wanted the bio streamlined and edited.. In my eyes the edits by this user which I reverted were vandalism that both removed content from the page and violated WP:COI. Exceptions that are spelled out in WP:3RRNO. Each time I reverted one of their edits, I left a message on their talk page. Now perhaps I could have spent more time and left a more personal message on their page rather than just using WP:TWINKLE. I won't disagree with you on that point. Additionally you said you would have blocked me for copyright violations? I'm sorry that but that is preposterous. I was not adding WP:COPYVIO material and NOWHERE in their edit summary did Monelisa say they were removing such material. I would also note that an admin, Oshwah, agreed with me enough to block the user.
  2. Second lets look at Sarah Marshall (French model) with Vision 2 (talk · contribs). Here I need to own up to my mistake. Allow me to explain while NOT trying to excuse my actions. What I saw was a brand new user removing content from a page with zero explanation. This coupled with multiple messages left on their talk page with zero response. What I epicly failed at (and whole heartedly earned a WP:TROUT for) was I straight up didn't read through what they were actually removing from the page. While they still should have added an edit summary explaining why, considering this was a brand new user here, I am in the wrong and offer Mea culpa.
  3. Third we turn to Urfi Javed which is an incredibly poorly written article with incomplete sentences and broken English. I think my disagreement/misunderstand is that in my book notability, significance and importance are all synonyms. WP:A7 talks about significance & importance which I always understood as the same as notability. If I created a page about best friend for fun, it would be deleted for WP:A7, a non-notable individual with a page doesn't explain their significance and importance. It was based on this that I used WP:CSD.
To summarize, I am a very level minded individual and am ALWAYS happy to receive feedback. If you think I'm doing something wrong, let me know. I will absolutely own up to my mistakes when I make them. As you noted in response to my WP:AIV I need to work at WP:AGF. I would encourage you to do the same. Having never interacted with me, to start off by leaving a message warning me to stay away from the administrative side of Wikipedia and saying you would be forced to take this discussion to ANI is not WP:AGF. Now if after a caution message from you I had responded with an "eff you, I'll do what I want!" or if I continued to ignore your cautions, well then I would agree your tone would be warranted. I appreciate you taking the time to caution me and bring some of my actions to my attention. I have learned a couple of good lessons from your notes and will be sure to take them to heart moving forward. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:11, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: see my comments above. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:14, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
As I said, I am not going to remove the flag, but if Ritchie333 remains unconvinced after this discussion, they can do it themselved.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:33, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Okay, I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. Of course I'm not going to drag you to ANI now, and by the looks of it I won't need to ever. It was more a device to get you to pay attention to what I was saying and to take it seriously. I'm not saying any of this to be mean or belittling, rather to say that there are some fundamental concepts that we need to get sorted out. I think we're done with case 2, so let's focus on the others:

  • Case 1 : I'd urge you to have a look at the history of Peter Rice (executive) and User talk:Monelisa. I'd also recommend you add importScript("User:The Earwig/copyvios.js"); to Special:Mypage/monobook.js (if you're using a Monobook skin) or Special:Mypage/vector.js (if you're using a Vector skin), which will give you an extra menu option "Copyvio check". Whenever you see something whose prose looks particularly gushing with lots of puffery and peacock terms, hit that button and check for copyvio. The version you were reverting back to was getting about 70% on the copyvio tool, while the shorter version was reporting about 35%. Sure, I know you didn't deliberately add the copyvio in (that's that "assume good faith" thing kicking in there ;-D) but unfortunately copyvios are against the terms of use so we have to take action against them. Ironically, I've just had to have a word with Monelisa for re-introducing a copyvio in that article, so have a read of what I've written there. And finally, she did write "The owner of the page wanted the bio streamlined and edited" and that could mean she was asked personally to fix up the article, or it could mean she simply read Peter Rice complain about Wikipedia online - as a reasonably public figure, I'd expect him to have a Twitter feed with lots of subscribers. (After all, the owner of the page is actually the Wikimedia Foundation, so I wouldn't take anything it says as hard gospel) A few years back it was well-known that Rick Wakeman complained on his personal blog about his WP article on a regular basis as it was full of factual errors. Again, this is applying "assume good faith" - there are multiple explanations for what the editor said, so we'll pick the one that's not obviously malicious.
As you may have seen from Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship/RickinBaltimore#Vandal-fighting and lack of content creation - bad?, Oshwah's block came in for strong criticism from some editors; to his credit, he quickly realised his error, apologised, and offered to help the new user, which is good.
  • Case 3 : The problem with words like "notability", "significance" and "importance" is they're subjective terms and easy to mix up, so here's how I see it. Why do we have speedy deletion in the first place? Well, it's simply to save time at AfD, otherwise we'd have lots of blatantly unimportant bands, businesses and people clogging up deletion debates that all get closed as WP:SNOW delete. So speedy deletion stops us wasting time on trivia, which is more time spent writing the encyclopedia (some speedies, particularly G3, G10 and G12 - look them up - are actually important to delete ASAP, the rest aren't so much). What this boils to is that a legitimate A7 is one where there is no reasonable chance any neutral and uninvolved editor could improve it to a state where an AfD would close anything other than "delete". Remember that AfDs have several outcomes, including "merge", "redirect", "userfy" and "transwiki" - if you believe any of those are possible, it's not an A7. Here's the most recent example of an A7 I turned down - William Tyznik. The article says : "professor emeritus of the department of Animal Science at The Ohio State University" - well that's a good claim to pass the notability criteria for academics. Note - that it doesn't even need a source to clear A7, it just has to be believable (that's the "credible claim of importance"). If you have any doubts about whether an article meets A7 or not, always defer to AfD (or not deleting at all). Have a look at Wikipedia:Field guide to proper speedy deletion which explains more.
Regarding poor English and broken prose, as the old saying goes : WP:SOFIXIT. Contrary to popular opinion, writing articles is not some mythical science and I'm certain everyone here can do it if they give it a go.

I'm sorry I've waffled on quite a lot here, but I really do have your best interests at heart and I hope this explains further where I'm coming from. If you've got any more questions, feel free to let me know. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:20, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: Dear god man, did you need to write me a book?!?! Really REALLY appreciate your detailed response. I'm going to save us both a little time and not going through everything you said in another detailed response, but suffice it to say I greatly appreciate you taking the time to give me such a wonderfully helpful explanation. Case 3 was particularly helpful and I will be sure to use this moving forward. Thanks again! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:00, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletions declined

I have declined this and this because you used {{db-policy}}, which is for WP:CSD#T2 cases (templates that are unambiguous misrepresentations of established policy) and displays "a template that is a blatant misrepresentation of established policy"; yet I fail to see how that speedy deletion criterion is applicable to either of the two templates that you used it on. --Redrose64 (talk) 00:05, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Zaiqa TFC

Hello Zackmann08. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Zaiqa TFC, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: tv channels are not eligible for deletion via WP:CSD#A7. Thank you. SmartSE (talk) 14:52, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

@Ace0vspades: The basic issue is that you have failed to provide any WP:Reliable sources for your edits. Wikipedia expressly forbids WP:original research and requires that edits be cited. You also seem to have a clear Conflict of interest. While I am very sorry to hear about your friend's uncle, if you wish to make changes to the page you need to provide reliable sources. Perhaps there was a newspaper that ran an obituary? I did some research and wasn't able to find any news coverage. Please read the links I posted in this message (WP:Reliable source, WP:Original research and WP:COI. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:03, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Regarding speedy deletion of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Irinjalakuda

Hello Zackmann08, I recently created a page on my school and I believe it was not approved by Wikipedia. The reason for deletion was that the sources were mainly from the school website. But I assure you there was nothing like that. All the information and material on the article was made myself by getting necessary information from my teachers and the school journal. I really wish that you will consider this message and remove the proposed deletion. If not please suggest an edit on the current page so that it fits into the rules, because I spent a lot of time on making this article. Adarsh factory (talk) 01:51, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

@Adarsh factory: the issue is that the material you posted is 100% WP:Original research which is not allowed. You yourself just stated that you got "necessary information from my teachers". There are zero citations on the page. This is an encyclopedia, not a web host. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:57, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
@Zackmann08: Hey Zack, I understand what you are saying but the the details about the school are true, and also I am not trying to advertise the school. Our school has been here in our area for over 20 years and I wanted to make an article on it on Wiki. You may check Bhavan's schools of India. Can you please suggest an edit regarding this so that I can have the page published. I had asked this in the previous talk. Yours faithfully.Adarsh factory (talk) 12:58, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
@Adarsh factory: unfortunately you completely ignored what I said. I am not contesting the fact that what the article said is true! Wikipedia is based upon verifiability, not truth. You have not provided any sources to back up your claims. Did you read the link about WP:Original research I posted? I am trying to WP:AGF but your response makes it clear you did not bother to read the links included in my initial reply. Once you read those I will answer your questions. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:07, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Annmarie Hanlon entry

Hi Zackmann08 and thank you for your notification. I would like to ask what is the necessary time that I need to modify the entry. Many thanks in advance, Nikos — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nikolaos16 (talkcontribs) 17:39, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

@Nikolaos16: my advice for you would be to try going through Articles for Creation. Since you are new to Wikipedia, this process will help you learn how things work and get assistance with the process. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:41, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
@Zackmann08: Many thanks again. Will do as instructed and modify the post the soonest.

Hi, I understand that a Wiki page is not a CV; however it is standard practice for pages on academic research scientists to have an Awards section. I have seen them on many others' pages both in prose and list format. There is no rule against it, it is documented on the research group's website, and for these reasons I would like to re-add. Thanks! Wsjkowl — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wsjkowl (talkcontribs) 14:33, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

@Zigzig20s: unfortunately it won't be as easy. Book covers fall under WP:FAIRUSE, that is to say that they are allowed to be placed on the article even if the image is copy-written. The same is NOT true of an image of a person. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:36, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion of Ellp page

Hi @Zackmann08,

We were notified by you that the page created could be up for deletion, which eventually was deleted due to ambiguous advertising. We (Ellp Limited, a software company) would like to create a page whereby we provide information regarding the history and set-up of the company. Our intention is not to advertise the company or product, but instead to create a go-to place where all the necessary and factual information about the company can be found.

We would like to achieve something similar to the Iobit page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IObit). How should we best proceed to achieve a similar result?

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

JTan124 (talk) 10:44, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

@JTan124: Unfortunately you are in violation of multiple Wikipedia policies. For starters your account is clearly shared by multiple people as you are using the term "We" rather than "I", please read WP:NOSHARE. Additionally, this is an encyclopedia, not a means for promoting your company. If you want to create a page about your company, I suggest creating a website as Wikipedia is NOT a webhost. Yes Other stuff exists that doesn't conform, but that doesn't justify the creation of your page. Hope that helps answer your question. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:00, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
@Zackmann08: Thanks for your reply! With regards, to the account, I'm using the term 'we' to refer to what we as a company (Ellp) would like to achieve. Kindly note I'm the only one who has access to it (no one else has login details). As I explained, our intention was not to advertise the company or product but merely a means whereby all the necessary and factual information about the company can be found - we already have a website. When I mentioned the other company/companies (such as iObit - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IObit, IFTTT - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFTTT, Zapier - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zapier, etc) I was pointing out that we wanted to achieve something similar not justifying the creation of the page, that is since we're the ones creating the content we would have a disclaimer stating that this article appears to have close connection with its subject. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks! -- JTan124 (talk) 08:34, 11 November 2016 (UTC)

infobox for Bauza Island

I don't know that much about infoboxes, but since your edit, it says "Lua error in Module:Location_map at line 362: No value was provided for longitude." It seems you know what you're doing but something just isn't quite right, so I don't want to undo your change ...help! Thanks ;-) Pseudopanax (talk) 11:01, 11 November 2016 (UTC)

@Pseudopanax: (talk page stalker) This is because no-one has set up {{Infobox islands}} for conversion (from coordinates in several infobox parameters to coordinates using just a |coordinates= parameter) properly yet (this should probably be included somewhere in Help:Coordinates in infoboxes). Basically, the |coordinates= parameter has to be passed to {{Location map}} for it to work without the |latitude= and |longitude= parameters, and he hasn't done that. @Zackmann08: Here is an example of how an infobox should be converted (note that the first block of text is in a {{Location map}} transclusion). Hey, thanks for cleaning up that image for me. I'm not a regular editor on Wikipedia and I took on various projects concerning the Nigerian national team in my spare time because of the start of WC qualifiers. Janet Rafferty page

Zackmann08,

My name is Ryan King, I am a student worker at the Cobb Institute of Archaeology where Dr. Rafferty is a retired professor. I have been asked to create pages for a few of our past faculty members including Dr. Rafferty. I'm still learning the ways of Wikipedia and was wondering if you could please put the Dr. Rafferty page back as a draft so I can continue working with it and improving it. If you have any questions, Derek Anderson who works at the Cobb is the one who asked me to create these pages and would be glad to answer any questions you may have. His email address is dta49@msstate.edu. Thanks,

My best, Ryan King

@Danderson22: thanks for the message. A number of things...
  1. I am not an admin and thus cannot restore your page. You will need to consult the admin who deleted the page.
  2. Please take time to read the links I just posted on your talkpage. There are NUMBER of issues with what you just posted on my talk page. You rarely use real names on here. I will not be using an email address to contact anyone. That is not how this works.
  3. You need to read WP:COI and WP:PROMO. This is an encyclopedia, not a means to promote a retired professor.

Flooded watchlist

I have been starting a lot of articles on protected areas in Brazil lately. Usually I check all the changes that show up on my watchlist, but I think today I will skip a few ...

Keep up the good work! Aymatth2 (talk) 14:37, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

This is another good reason to let the bot perform these changes. Many people hide bot edits from their watchlists. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:41, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
I hide bot edits, but I really don't mind. The above is just part of the list. It put me in a good mood – and I changed the skeleton page I have been using for these articles to use the new {{coords}} format. If a bot had done it I would not have seen the change and would have have kept on adding pages with the deprecated format. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:39, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

I'm seeing two issues with this fix that have visibly changed the information on the page. The first is that the page used to display the coordinates in the deg/min/sec format, but has now been changed to all decimal. Now if there is a MOS page that prescribes this format then all well and good, but otherwise the format should not be being arbitrarily changed by automated or semiautomated bot-like edits. The established format on the page should be retained, in the same way we do for MOS:ENGVAR, WP:CITEVAR, MOS:DATERET, and MOS:ERA. The second problem is that the coords in the two infoboxes were different, but you have now made them identical. Now admittedly, the difference is less than 100 yards and I don't even know if they were meant to be different or this is just overprecision, but it is wrong in principle to change data in an article in order to fix a template coding problem without reference to a reliable source. SpinningSpark 15:40, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
@Spinningspark: It looks like Zackmann08 didn't edit the template properly; the {{Infobox coord}} sub-template automatically sets the coordinates' format to display in DMS notation (for some reason). Is it really important enough that we need to re-substitute 3,500 pages, though? (Also, to Zackmann08, please don't do it because JJMC89 bot is perfectly capable of doing it itself.) Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

15:58, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
Well it's not Armegeddon for Wikipedia if you don't, but I think you should. This kind of attempted forced change of format without consensus is very annoying for content creators and has led to some protracted and widespread edit wars causing severe disruption. This is the very reason that the RETAIN type of guidelines have been put in place. There is a case for the advantages of the DMS format, but that is not the point here, the point is that these changes are being made without consensus and against the spirit of policy, if not the actual letter. SpinningSpark 16:46, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
Actually, it has just been pointed out to me that WP:STYLEVAR generalizes the RETAIN principle to all style elements. That links right to the top of the MOS in the lead, so this principle is considered pretty important and not following it is going against policy. SpinningSpark 17:46, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
@Spinningspark: SOrry for only just now responding. Late night and didn't get back on until just a few minutes ago. First off, please know that changing the display format of the coordinates was unintentional so my apologies. It has been pointed out that there is another bot that is taking care of what I was trying to do so I'm going to duck out and let the bot take care of it so no more edits will be taking place on my end. THanks for the notes! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:04, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I don't think the bot would have managed this one correctly, since there were two infoboxes. I have made the changes manually, resulting in no visible changes to the displayed article, as far as I can see. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:24, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

This account has been blocked for editing without a task or trial approval in violation of the Bot policy. I see you have filed for BRFA's now, should they move to trial the block will be removed. — xaosflux Talk 22:01, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: I would first and foremost like to apologize. There was no intent to break any rules here. NOT disputing that I did, I am simply pleading ignorance and missunderstanding. I was unaware that ZERO edits could be performed with a bot account before it was approved. I just started looking into bots and how they work about 10 days ago and was in the process of learning. The edits I made were merely my attempts to learn. I wanted to make sure I had some idea of how to work with bots before I filed a WP:BRFA. My understanding was that bot accounts could make a small number of sandbox edits without the need to have a formal BRFA. None of the edits I made were ones where I ran a script and walked away. They were all trial edits where I edited one page and then checked the results. I also made a really dumb and rookie mistake... Since I was not used to working with 2 accounts, I forgot to switch back to my regular account (Zackmann08) before making edits to articles. All the edits on November 20 (see: Special:Contributions/ZackBot) were made via the browser without the use of a script... I was just logged in on the wrong account. A mistake I won't make again. I've decided that when I login with my bot I will use a different browser entirely to prevent the error from occurring again. I have a few favors to ask:
  1. Can you help me understand what I did wrong? Is there no mechanism for sandbox editing before a formal BRFA is filed? I would assume there is since I need to test the code.. I want to learn and make sure I don't repeat my mistakes.
  2. Once I fully understand what mistakes I made, would you be willing to discuss removing the block?
I want to emphasize that there was no attempt to intentionally break the rules or skirt regulations. This was truly a mistake. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in learning from the error and moving forward. Thanks in advance! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:41, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: following up on my message above... I just looked at my two BRFAs and saw the clerk notes. Seems like the big mistake that I made was in not signing out of the bot account. What is the best course of action here. Should I revert those 19 edits and then re-perform the edits with this account? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:45, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
Do a Find for "Valid operations without approval" in the WP:BOTPOL page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:03, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: Thank you! That is exactly what I needed. Really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Is it fair to say that I was doing fine with my testing until I forgot which account I was logged in as? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:05, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
Yes, that looks fair to say. Your approach above is a good one and will probably be forgiven if you avoid doing it again. I wonder if there is something you could add to your skin.css file that would display a big red BOT ACCOUNT at the top of every page when you are logged in as the bot. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:17, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Infobox change has broken Crimea

Hi Zackmann08. Your recent change to Crimea (removal of "|locator map size =220px" without replacement by "|map_width =220") broke appears to have broken the infobox in normal view but not, for some reason, in preview view while editing. Please don't do out-of-process category renames. It tends to lose page histories and leave a lot of mess behind. Instead, you can nominate them for speedy renaming at WP:CFD. All category renames are handled through the CfD process due to how many edits category renames usually involve. ~ Rob13Talk 05:46, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

@BU Rob13: help me understand... What do you mean by "out of process"? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 06:05, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
Category renames are handled through the CfD process. Since they affect large numbers of pages (similar to templates), we discuss category renames before they're actually carried out. Or, in the case of a speedy rename (which the tracking categories would have qualified as), we at least give other editors a chance to object. See what I did for Category:Infobox NFL player articles with line breaks, for instance. ~ Rob13Talk 06:08, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello, I received your message. I am not sure why my last post here was just deleted. Clearly I am doing something wrong. In brief: I would like to change the photo on Mary McCormack's page. I am trying to do it the right way (I own the copyright of the one I am using... Or I am happy to use another free-use photo), but it keeps getting deleted and the old one replaced. What is the proper protocol for this? Why would the existing picture be acceptable but another one not? Please be assured I am not making disruptive edits. Mary should have a photo which looks like her as her main Wikipedia photo (and not a candid, heavily pregnant one). Please let me know what I can do differently. It isn't my intention to make trouble on Wikipedia! 2605:E000:608A:1200:69D3:43CE:B0E2:96B5 (talk) 01:42, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi

NFL players articles now have "{{main other|" at the top of the page (ex: Marc Bulger). Think it has something to do with the recent edits to the template. In the code, "main other" is in the tracking cat section. Thanks 18:22, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

@WikiOriginal-9: GREAT catch!!! Thank you. Stupid effing typos... Fixed it. Will take a bit to clear the cache... Thanks so much. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:25, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Page Product Revision

@Zackmann08: Hi there. First, thanks for taking the time to contribute your edits to the page. Appreciate it. However, I noticed you edited out the entire products section for the Able2Extract page and cited promotional issues as the reason. However, I'm not exactly sure why it would be considered "promotional"? Listing product features is merely descriptive of what the product does. It was done in an objective manner; no subjective adjectives were used. No other additional text was added to persuade the user. They were simply listed. Would you be able to clarify the reasoning behind the cut?

Other pages such as Adobe Photoshop do the same thing -see Adobe Photshop's Selection Tools section- and are highly promotional-sounding to boot: "Photoshop includes a few versions of the pen tool. The pen tool creates precise paths that can be manipulated using anchor points. The free form pen tool allows the user to draw paths freehand, and with the magnetic pen tool, the drawn path attaches closely to outlines of objects in an image, which is useful for isolating them from a background." I'm thinking text sounding like this would be up for deletion as well....

If you have any suggestions as to how this can be resolved, I'd be open to discussion. Hopefully, you can help me out there? I think it'd be a mistake to cut out those details as most users look to sources like Wikipedia to find such information.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

TorBel80 (talk) 20:35, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

@TorBel80: Adobe Photoshop is one of the most widely used photo editing softwares in existence and is insanely notable. Listing the features is thus appropriate. The software you and your company create us no where near as notable and just listing out features is nothing more than promotional. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:38, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

It appears that you removed several 'deprecated' parameters from this infobox recently, but these are still widely used. Would you consider undoing your change until such time as the pages using the old parameters have been updated, as the result is now hundreds of pages with largely empty infoboxes? Thanks. --Michig (talk) 18:00, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

@Michig: not sure how that happened... The tracking category was empty, meaning that there were no pages using these deprecated parameters. Can you give me an example? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:02, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
@Michig: disregard my last. There was a typo in the code. Can you double check the template and make sure it looks good? Thanks for catching that! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:09, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
Some now look ok, others still not showing full infobox (for me), e.g Len Williams (speedway rider), Ritchie Hawkins - I suspect this is a caching issue as if I edit then show preview the fields reappear. Does that make sense? --Michig (talk) 18:19, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
@Michig: yea if you purge the cache it will fix it. See WP:BYC... --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:22, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
Ok - looks ok now. Thanks. --Michig (talk) 18:29, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

FYI, these don't qualify for G8, since the template itself isn't being deleted. G6 is more appropriate (uncontroversial housekeeping, since it's no longer being populated). ~ Rob13Talk 01:14, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: Gotcha. I was reading "Categories populated by a deleted or retargeted template" and thinking retargeted applied since the template is no longer targeting this category. But that makes sense. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 01:16, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
As I see it, this is indeed the purpose of G8: when a category is populated by a template (and not supposed to be populated any other way), the category's fundamentally dependent on the part of the template code that populates it, and when that code is removed, the category has become dependent on something that no longer exists. Suggestion for creating new infobox tracking cats

The way I create new infobox tracking categories without having to retype everything is to open an existing category, like Category:Pages using infobox castrum with unknown parameters, click Edit, copy all, and then paste everything into the new category's page, changing only the name of the infobox. Takes just a few seconds. That way, they all look the same. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:46, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: I'll do ya one better than that... Checkout the code in the first section of pre tags on my sandbox.... Copy and paste and change NOTHING! MUAHAHAHAHAH! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:49, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Clever. Can you please add the other text that is present in the page I linked above? A TOC is always helpful when people are looking for specific parameters. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:54, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: sure! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:58, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: IDEA!!!! {{unknown params category}}.... Key thing I'm thinking is to set {{tracking category|category=no}}. All these pages will be in Category:Unknown parameters. Don't need to clutter up Category:Tracking categories as well... --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:16, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
The template is a great idea. Nice work. I have copy-edited it just a bit. I don't know how I feel about setting tracking=no. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:42, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: glad you like it. As I said, the reason is that if the parent category is already in the tracking category, then each individual one shouldn't ALSO be. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:44, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Please check again. The intention of this category is *not* to check for unknown parameters, it's to check for parameters that have been defined locally instead of being fetched through Wikidata. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:12, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

@Mike Peel: while that maybe the intention behind it, that was in fact NOT how the category was being populated. If you look at the code that was there in this diff you will see it was just checking for unknown parameters. Has nothing to do with Wikidata. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:17, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Well, yes, after you edited it to add the list of known parameters, it was then checking for unknown parameters. ;-) But before that, it was checking to see if *any* parameter had been set/locally defined. So pages like Mark II (radio telescope), which has a completely wikidata-driven infobox (no locally defined parameters) don't show up in that category, while others like RATAN-600 that still do have locally-defined parameters that need moving to Wikidata *do* show up in that category. Thankfully, @JJMC89: has restored this other category now. :-) (although I guess Mediawiki's still catching up on repopulating it after this change). Thanks. Headquarters of government agencies

Hi! I took a look at your cleanup of the Houston Fire Department page.

I don't object to most of your changes. However I strongly disagree with the removal of the information about the HFD headquarters, so I have restored it. It's important for the reader to know where the agency's administrative offices are located. As of writing HFD still has its headquarters at 600 Jefferson, 7th Floor 77002

If some of the information is too detailed (say floor numbers/room numbers within a building) for the lead it should be moved to a section about the agency's governance. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:21, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

@Kudpung: Thank you for the message! I actually just left a note on your page. I will review the tutorial for sure. For what it is worth, I don't do that much NPP. I have a number of other tasks I focus on but it is something I do from time to time. Most of my NPP arises from my work to keep Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images empty. about 80% of the pages that show up there are new pages from first time editors. This is where the page that started the whole shouting match on your talk page came to my attention. Thanks for the note and please do not hesitate to leave any additional feedback you may have for me. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:14, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Template:YouTube

Do we really need Category:Pages using youTube with unknown parameters and Category:Articles using YouTube with invalid parameters? Can both functions not be handled by the same category? 117Avenue (talk) 20:47, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

They perform different tasks. The unknown parameters uses Module:Check for unknown parameters. The unknown categories that are filled by that category are, by convention, exclusively unknown parameters. I'm not entirely sure what the Invalid parameters category is about and whether it is needed, but it appears to be using some complex logic to determine if there are other issues with the parameters. If so, that does not belong in the unknown param category. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:51, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi. You made some edits to this template, but something is wrong with it. Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

Thank you for your sensible merge nomination of {{Infobox former country}} and {{Infobox country}}, but you didn't select the sidebar TfM notice when you nominated those templates for merge, resulting in some very high-profile articles with suspect visual output. As a template editor, you're expected to take those sorts of things into account when editing high-risk templates such as those transcluded on United States, etc. Please be a bit more careful. Use of ZackBot for Infobox single

How do I go about requesting that a bot be used to remove the deprecated {{{Certification}}} from {{Infobox single}}? It seems similar to other ZackBot tasks. —Ojorojo (talk) 20:04, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

@Ojorojo: So ZackBot is run by me... I've been having issues getting approval. There is a huge backlog at WP:BRFA. I will start working on writing the bot right now. You can help in a few ways. First if you could start a thread at WP:BOTREQ requesting for the work to be done. Mention me and ZackBot. Then when I open a WP:BRFA you can chime in there as well. Bottom line, there are 2 hurdles. First I have to write the bot (will take about 30 minutes). Second, I have to get approval from the WP:BAG to actually run the bot. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:26, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
As a piece of advice, it's almost always preferable to request approval then write the code. Start the timer and all that. As long as you have code ready by the time you need to run a trial, you'll be fine. If it's a technically complex task, maybe that would change, but this is not. ~ Rob13Talk 23:56, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Please ignore my revert of you - bad click, I reverted myself. As for the withdrawn request, please let the bag bot archive it. — xaosflux Talk 21:01, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: no worries. Been there many times myself. Thanks for the info. I'll leave the work to the bots from now on. :-) --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:28, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
@Magioladitis and Xaosflux: regarding ZackBot 5 (which just finished running). If down the road another parameter is deprecated in that same template. Can I reactivate the bot? Do I need to go through WP:BRFA again? I don't anticipate this happening at all but I want to understand what the rules are. Thanks for both of your help!! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:16, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
If it is substantially the same, and there has been some discussion (or attempted discussion) on the template talk page without objections you would be fine. — xaosflux Talk 04:24, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Template:Infobox song contest

Not sure what you did wrong in this change but it has caused havoc and navigation issues across many articles. OK, it works on annual Eurovision and Junior Eurovision Song Contest pages, and allows you to flick through the years. But that template is also used on other contests linked to WikiProject Eurovision, as part of an overhaul merge of similar templates, so that the navigational section works on all contests such as Eurovision Young Dancers, Turkvision Song Contest. Since you've changed it, it no longer works on ALL articles. Please repair. Thank you! Wes Mouse Talk 18:00, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

@Wesley Mouse: thanks for the note. Could you provide me with specific pages that are now broken? The two pages that you linked to do not use the template. If you can give me a specific page that is broken I will address the issue. I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. It is a very complicated template and it is absolutely possible that I broke something something with my edits. Give me a couple of examples and I will make sure it gets fixed. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:07, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
They are just the general contest pages. I would have thought with the fact I mentioned annual pages, that linking to their parent contest page would have been easier, rather than linking to every single contest individually - there are approx 100. Some contests are biennial, others are annual. User:AxG did some complex coding on the template so that the year navigation would work across the spectrum of contests it is used on, and take into account some contests take place every year, and others every 2 years. Wes Mouse Talk 18:10, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
@Wesley Mouse: ok... You say there are 100+ pages that are broken... I am once again asking can you give me an example?? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:11, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Eurovision Young Dancers 2017, ABU International Dance Festival 2017, Eurovision Young Musicians 2016. To pick out on a few. The bottom of the template does not provide navigation between contest's, like it does on Eurovision Song Contest and Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Perhaps restoring the syntax that AxG had worked so hard and spent many man-hours would be wise? Wes Mouse Talk 18:13, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
@Wesley Mouse: well the previous template had multiple issues and the fact that AxG (talk · contribs) "worked so hard and spent many man-hours" on is frankly irrelevant to the discussion. I will look into this and find a solution. But lets relax a little. This isn't causing "havoc". The template works just fine... It is just now missing one piece for some transclusions that was previously there. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:15, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

"Relax a little"? Did you really just come out with that remark? I am being clam and relaxed about this. All I am merely doing is pointing out that a change you made was not completed, and now the template does not work across all contests like it was designed to do. Don't forget written conversations lack tone, so please do not try to second-guess that someone isn't "relaxed". To give you an idea what I am on about. The bottom of the template allows ← 2006 Eurovision Song Contest 2008 → on ESC and JESC contests. But it doesn't work on other contests that are under the project's scope - the reason why several templates were merged so that they could be used on all annual contests, and the reason it took AxG almost a week to sort out and test codes so that the navigation would also skip -2 or +2 years for biennial events. The Simpsons episode infobox template

Hello. This edit of yours essentially disabled the caption field, obviously unintentionally. I have no knowledge in this area whatsoever but you need you fix it. In 2012, SF Weekly ran a cover story about pre-trial detention which reported that "In San Francisco, 83 percent of county jail inmates have not stood trial", often because they are too poor to afford bail.<ref name="jail02">{{cite web | title= Barred from Freedom: How Pretrial Detention Ruins Lives | url= http://archives.sfweekly.com/sanfrancisco/barred-from-freedom-how-pretrial-detention-ruins-lives/Content?oid=2187112&showFullText=true | accessdate=December 22, 2016 | publisher = SF Weekly }}</ref>

In March 2015, San Francisco Public Defender [[Jeff Adachi]] revealed inmate reports of being forced to engage in gladiator-style fights for the amusement of sheriff's deputies at the County Jail at 850 Bryant Street. Alleged ringleader Scott Neu, who had previously been accused of sexually assaulting inmates, and two other deputies were ultimately charged with a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges. It seems that this change of yours to Template:Infobox bilateral relations is adding articles such as Bangladesh–Russia relations to Category:Pages using Infobox bilateral relations with deprecated parameters because they use parameter filetype=svg. The template documentation says "filetype is an optional named parameter. For example, putting filetype=svg will use an SVG image under the same name". Without the parameter, the aforementioned bilateral relations article would show no map in its infobox. Please advise what should be done. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:17, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

@Worldbruce: yes I created this tracking category to start removing the filetype parameter. This is a rather odd practice, to just specify a filetype. I'm planning to change the template so that you just supply the filename. Right now you MUST upload a file to match a certain name pattern: File:<first country name> <second country name> Locator.png which is really silly. Just upload a file and supply the file name. Right now the category is just a tracking one. Doesn't change the functionality of the template. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:10, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Valley Fire

The article Valley Fire you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Valley Fire for comments about the article. Well done! I got your message on not using thumbs in the infobox. Problem, which I already posted to another editor, was that if you have an item that is white like the flag in question, only using the image, results in it merging into the background of the article white background. Since using "frame" or "border" are ineffective in showing the outline of the flag in question, I used "thumb" (and yes I know it not what it specified (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE), but while the MOS work most of the time there are some times when they do not and there seem to be no good workaround except to deviate from the rules, like use a "thumb."

(see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE).

Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2016 December 27

I've just reverted your totally out-of-process closure of this discussion, and changes to the infobox. It should go without saying that you shouldn't close your own TfDs and implement your preferred option, especially when the discussion has only been going for a day and has not achieved consensus. Please don't do anything like this again. Nick-D (talk) 05:09, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

@Nick-D: for what it is worth I am sorry about that. Been a LONG 48 hours. Sick, jetlag, stuck in an airport, family drama, etc. etc. No excuses!! Just offering a bit of an explanation for how I got my own head so far up my.... Anyway, I left a public comment on that thread and I will be abstaining from any further process on the thread. Not that it will mean much, but I actually didn't see your last comment until you reverted my change. It was still an error on my part, but I didn't see it and just think "Eh, screw that guy!". Anyway, again I do apologize. Hope you are well. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 05:16, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Infobox Oxford college, etc

Consensus at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2016 December 20#Template:Infobox Oxford college was for a merge, but you have simply made wrappers. Please will you complete the merge, or re-open the discussion, so that it can be closed properly, with the templates listed in the holding cell? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:00, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

@Pigsonthewing: my apologies... I viewed those as functionally being the same thing. I.E. that converting a template to a wrapper is functionally the same as merging the templates, only with less work needed to be done. Sounds like I misunderstood. Let me ask, is there a reason NOT to leave them as a wrapper? What benefit is there to truly merging the templates as opposed to having the 2 templates function as wrappers? To be clear, absolutely not disagreeing with you, just looking to better understand. thanks! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:12, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes; wrappers have a greater maintenance burden than a single template. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:29, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: copy that! I'm making it happen. Took care of Oxford, now onto Cambridge. Question for ya... What becomes of the content at Template talk:Infobox Oxford college. I've redirected the main template... but don't want to loose the discussions. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:23, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

@Zackmann08 why did you delte my edit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fballfan11 (talkcontribs) 04:13, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
@Fballfan11: First of all, always start new sections on a talk page when starting a new thread. Second of all, read WP:OWN. Third, While I am sorry you worked super hard on it, as I stated in my edit summary, none of what you added was even remotely close to being properly cited and you broke multiple templates on the page. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:22, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
@Zackmann08: OK i fixed all the uncited work by citing them all, i would apprecciate if you would let me know what i needed to fix instead of deleting all my work, thanks

Speedy deletion declined: Candle in the Tomb (TV series)

Hello Zackmann08. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Candle in the Tomb (TV series), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: G12 requires that there is no content worth saving. Here removing the Synopsis section leaves a viable stub. Thank you. SoWhy 13:20, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

CSD tagging

If a good, copyvio-free version can be found in the page history (e.g. T. F. O. Rippingham before the recent edits), it's preferable to revert to that version instead of wholesale deleting the page. Just something to check before tagging in the future. Thanks for your work, ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 19:28, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Some NFL biography infoboxes still using deprecated parameters

While working on Raymond Berry's infobox, I noticed it still used the highschool parameter, which was removed from Template:Infobox NFL biography on December 15. I had to manually fix it. How do you splain this? Lizard (talk) 18:30, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Looks like it got overlooked, either at the BRFA or in the list of deprecated params. Thanks for fixing it! Primefac (talk) 18:37, 7 January 2017 (UTC) (talk page stalker)
Well, I actually have noticed quite a few of those "highschool" parameters still in infoboxes. Everyone else is good though. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 19:20, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: as the original approver of ZackBot 5, just wanted to bring this to your attention. I'll be re-running the code in a bit. I would like to delete my contributions

Hi Zackmann08!

After reading the rules you sent me about posting, I realized that it would be a conflict of interest for me to post the photo I added, and a conflict of interest for me to make the current corrections I made- due to my direct association to Guji Lorenzana.

My question is: whom do I contact in order to correct some of the info on Guji's wiki page? There were some minor information errors I wanted to correct, which could be verified from his IMDb.

But to be in accordance to Wiki's rules, I would like to delete my corrections to the page, but don't know exactly how to go about that without "making more corrections" to the wiki page. Could you help me with that so that I can correct my mistake?

Thank you so much!
